Community

JCI Boston is passionate about putting something back into the communities in which we live and work.

We recognise the importance of young people being active citizens and encourage members to take time to get involved in the community. Each year JCI Boston runs a number of community projects and we are always looking for volunteers to join projects teams, creating opportunities to get involved with practical and fund raising activities on a local, national and international level.

In 2013, Jen's main focus is the community aspect of JCI and we will be organising a number of events in the year. Please visit the events pages to find out more about these.

JCI Boston supports a number of local charities and each year we choose a local charity to support. In 2013 we will be supporting the Butterfly Hospice and the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.

Junior Chamber International as a worldwide organisation has pledged its support for Nothing But Nets, a charity that helps to fight Malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa, and JCI Boston is an active supporter of this campaign. National Malaria Day is the 25th April and JCI Boston will be again aiming to support this cause in April this year. To make a donation online, please visit JCI Boston- saying Goodbye to Malaria.

Projects we have run in the past for Nothing but nets include:

  • A clothes collection
  • A Easter themed market stall with hook-a-ducks
  • Phone recyclying

We have organised a number of community events in the past which include:

  • A bike ride from Boston to Skegness by 62 cyclists which raised nearly £12,000 for the Lincolnshire and Nottingham Air Ambulance in memory of the Gresham family. To read more visit the Boston standard website.
  • A ballon release for the Make a Wish charity
  • Assisted the Salvation Army in collecting presents for their Christmas tree appeal

The bike ride was a National award winning project in 2008, which meant JCI Boston had an European Award entry at European Conference in 2009, unfortunately we didn't win.

JCI Boston is the proud owners of 966 racing plastic ducks, and 16 hook-a-ducks, these may show up this year at some of our community events. We also allow them to be rented out for other fundraising activities, please contact the mother duck for more details.
